Properties :
Ketotifen fumarate is an oral asthma prophylactic and anti-allergic agent. The anti-asthmtaic activity of Ketotifen is mainly related to:
Inhibition of acute broncho-constriction.
Inhibition of accumulation of Eosinophils in the airways due to platelet activating Factor.
Inhibition of the release of histamine and leukotriction.
Astomed has also a powerful and sustained H1receptor blocking activity, therefore it is also Used in the treatment of allergic rhinitis and conjunctivitis. It may take several weeks for Ketotifen to develop its full effect in preventing
attacks of asthma.
Indications :
Astomed is indicated in the following cases:
-long term prevention of bronchial asthma.
-Allergic bronchial.
-Asthmatic symptoms associated with hay fever.
-Prevention and treatment of multi-system allergies.
-Allergic rhinitis.
-Allergic skin reactions.
-Allergic conjunctivitis.
Contra indications :Astomed should not be given to patients known for hypersensitivity to Ketotifen and other components. It should not be used for the treatment of acute asthma attacks.
Precautions :
-Previous anti-asthmatic treatment should be continued for a minimum of 2 weeks after initiation of Astomed treatment.
-In case of intercurrent infections, a specific anti-infective Agent should be given in addition To Astomed
-In beginning of treatment with Astomed the patient should take a special care While driving or operating machines.
-In pregnancy and laction the risk/benefit ratio should be considered if Astomed is to be Prescribed.
-Astomed may potentiate the effects of sedatives, hypnotics and antihistamines.
Side effects :
Astomed is generally well tolerated, but some of the following transient Common Side effects can be encountered.
-edation and drowsiness.
-Weight gain.
-Mouth dryness.
-Headache.
-Dizziness.
Dosage and Administration:
Adults and Children over 3 years of age: 1 tablet or 5 ml Syrup Twice a day with meals .
The daily dose for adults may be increased to 4 tablets or 20 ml syrup.
Children from 1 to 3 years: 2.5 ml syrup twice a day
Storage conditions : Store up to 25oC
