Properties :
This anti-cholinergic preparation blocks the response of the sphincter muscle of the iris and the accommodative muscle of the ciliary body to cholinergic stimulation producing papillary dilation (mydriasis) and paralysis of accommodation (cycloplegia) .
It acts rapidly , but has a shorter duration than atropine .
Indications :
For mydriasis and cycloplegia in diagnostic procedure .
Advantages :
Rapid onset of effect with cycloplegia occurring in thirty to sixty minutes .
The effect is localized and specific .
Contraindications :
Should not be used when narrow angle glaucoma is present or is suspected .
Should not be used in children under six years of age unless directed by physician .
Side Effects :
Increased intraocular pressure . Use of cyclopentolate has been associated with psychotic reactions and
behavioural disturbances in children especially with a 2% concentration , ataxia , incoherent speech ,
restlessness , hallucinations , disorientation as to time and Place failure to recognize people and tachycardia .
Precautions :
In elderly and others where increased intraocular pressure may be encountered , CYCLOMED should be used with caution . Use should be discontinued if vision becomes Blurred or rapid pulse or dizziness occur .
Systemic absorption may be minimized by compressing the lacrimal sac during and following instillation of the drops . Compression of the sac blocks passage of the drops to the nasal and pharyngeal mucosa where excessive absorption can occur .
Pregnancy and lactation :
There is insufficient evidence as to drug safety in pregnancy and lactation . This product should not be used during pregnancy unless it is considered essential by a physician .
Dosage :
Adults : One drop of CYCLOMED 0.5% followed by a second drop in five minutes , Or one drop of
CYCLOMED 1.0% .
Recovery usually occurs in twenty four hours . One or two drops of 1.0% or 2.0% Pilocarpine reduces recovery time to three to six hours in most patients .
Children : One drop of CYCLOMED 0.5% is instilled each eye , followed ten minutes later by a second
application of CYCLOMED 1.0% if necessary .

Over dose : Systemic toxicity may occur following topical use, particularly in children . It is manifested by flushing and dryness of the skin (a rash may be present in chlildren), blurred vision, a rapid and irregular pulse, fever, abdominal distension in infants, convulsions and hallucinations and the loss of neuromuscular co-ordination.
Treatment is supportive (there is no evidence that physostigmine is superior to supportive managment).
If accidentally ingested, induced emesis or perform gastric lavage.
Storage Conditions : Store up to 25°c .
